Fans of racy 90s classic livid as they call out everything reboot series gets wrong

A new series based on a classic 1999 thriller will make its debut on Amazon Prime later this month, but die-hard fans of the original are already calling out what it gets wrong compared to the source material.

The Cruel Intentions reboot series is described by the streamer as a 'new chapter'. While the characters are new, the series remains true to the original film's racy storyline which follows two manipulative step-siblings and their quest for power over their peers at an elite school, adapted from the 18th century novel Dangerous Liaisons.

Sarah Catherine Hook steps into the shoes of cruel Queen Bee Caroline Merteuil in the TV series, while Zac Burgess portrays her love-struck step-brother Lucien Belmont. In the original, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe played the pair, known as Kathryn Merteuil and Sebastian Valmont.

The series' synopsis reads: "Twenty-five years after the iconic film captivated audiences with its provocative drama, sex, and scandal, this series introduces a new class of cruel characters who are ready to take their games and manipulation to a whole new level."

"Whether you're a long-time fan of the film or new to the twisted tale, the series promises binge-worthy fun that audiences won't want to miss."

Despite getting just a two-minute look at the upcoming show's trailer, fans have been quick to list their critiques. "It really does look like a Gossip Girl reboot reboot [sic]. It's giving modern day influencer rich, not old money," lamented one viewer. "None of the mains stand out, especially not the male lead. But...maybe there'll be some surprises.

Another said the series looked much tamer than the original film, writing: "Why does it look so tame? The original Intentions, even with the softened ending, still felt Cruel. This doesn't."

Despite the flurry of negative comments, others couldn't contain their excitement for the upcoming show.

"Loved the original. I know how this ends and I’m not ready for it, again," said one fan. Another, referencing the cover of Bittersweet Symphony that appears in the trailer, shared: "Love that they brought the song back."

"I love the original but I’m still going to watch this one don’t care what y’all say in the comments," declared another, as a fellow commenter added: "Not all of the millennials coming for a show geared at another generation thinking it’s being made for them and their love of the original."

Cruel Intentions is streaming on Amazon Prime from November 21
