The rumours are true: Fantastic Beasts star Dan Fogler is heading from Hogwarts to the zombie apocalypse.

The actor responded to chatter on social media on Thursday (July 19) with a cryptic photo on Instagram confirming that he is joining the cast of The Walking Dead's ninth season.

Intriguingly, Dan captioned the photo: "The rumors are true...Hint: My character is named after my favorite Jedi…"

It's likely that he's referring to the character Luke from Robert Kirkman's comics series. Luke is one of the survivors led by Magna when she crosses paths with Rick's survivors in Washington DC.

His casting was also confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter – but there aren't any official details on who he's playing just yet.

The show hasn't yet cast Magna, but producers have signed up Into the Badlands' Eleanor Matsuura as Yumiko and are confirmed to have cast Tony Award nominee Lauren Ridloff as the show's first recurring deaf character, Connie.

Along with Luke, Yumiko and Connie are trusted allies of Magna and they all eventually form an alliance with Rick's forces at Alexandria in Kirkman's comics. How it'll play out on screen might be a different story.

The AMC series is beefing up its cast amid reports that Andrew Lincoln will quit the show before the end of the ninth season, with Lauren Cohan potentially also leaving to focus on her ABC series Whiskey Cavalier.

Producers have reportedly been working on signing original cast member Norman Reedus to a $20 million contract to re-focus the show around his character Daryl.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX and NOW TV in the UK.
