A familiar face is returning to the MCU – but perhaps not in the way you would expect.

Julian McMahon played Fantastic Four villain Doctor Victor Von Doom in the original 2005 movie and also 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer.

But now he's hanging up his Doctor Doom costume and joining the cast of Marvel's forthcoming Hulu series Runaways as a new character altogether.

McMahon will play a a character called Jonah in the new series, a character who's described as a bit of a mystery but who's a "pivotal player".

"While his origins and ultimate intentions are unknown, he is a pivotal player in the Runaways' rebellion against their parents," his character synopsis reads.

Marvel's Runaways tells the story of a diverse group of teens who learn their parents are involved in some secret evil organisation business, so the kids join together to defeat their parents with their own unique skills.

The classic Brian K Vaughan and Adrian Alphona-created comic is being adapted for TV by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – who know a thing or two about teen drama from their years working on The OC and Gossip Girl.

"We're incredibly excited to add Julian to our exceptional cast and we can't wait to see what he brings to the world of Marvel's Runaways," Schwartz and Savage said of McMahon's casting.

Of course, this isn't the first time Marvel has rebranded one of their previous movie stars in a new role.

It's a well known fact that Josh Brolin will play time-travelling mutant assassin Cable in Deadpool 2, even though he plays a different character altogether as Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy as well as the forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War film.

When he's not scoring new roles in new Marvel projects, McMahon is also well known for long serving TV roles in Nip/Tuck and Charmed.

Runaways joins fellow new project Inhumans as the latest Marvel storyline to hit TV screens. Inhumans premieres on ABC in the US on September 29.

Runaways will premiere November 21, 2017 on Hulu in the US.
