Far Cry 5 artwork reveals a militant Christian cult
It looks like Far Cry 5 will feature a militant Christian cult as its next group of antagonists.
Ubisoft has released key cover art for the game ahead of a full trailer on Friday. The image (in full below) features a band gathered around a table in an arrangement similar to that of The Last Supper.
There's a lot going on within the arrangement. Clearly the group in the image are militarists; the table is covered in weapons including pistols, automatic rifles, knives, rockets, and even a compound bow. One of the characters who isn't holding a weapon is still imitating a pistol with his hand.
Its religious iconography is also plain to see. The central figure, who is presumably the principal villain, has his palms extended outward in a Christ-like gesture and is sat in front of a book, presumably a Bible of some sort. There's also the shirtless captive with "SINNER" inscribed on his back, which hardly needs explanation.
Clearly the game isn't set in the 19th century, debunking theories, including ours, that Far Cry 5 would be a Western, in spite of the teaser trailer released earlier this week pointing in that direction.
But the game's actual time period remains unclear. The aviators and old-school warplanes in the background suggest a 1960s or 1970s setting, but those elements could simply be anachronistic, as you'd expect from a group of cultists in the middle of nowhere.
Whatever the decade, the image is undeniably reminiscent of the kinds of far-right Christian extremist groups who have made headlines in the US in recent years. In the time of President Trump, the decision by Ubisoft is bound to ruffle a few feathers.
Far Cry 5 is due to release before April 2018. The announcement trailer will air at 2pm BST on Friday, May 26.
