Fargo may not return for another season

It looks like season three could mark the end of FX series Fargo.

The black comedy-thriller is currently airing its third outing – to rave reviews, we might add, which usually almost guarantees shows carry on.

But FX's chief John Landgraf doesn't think there's any way any further series could top what we've already seen.

"There may never be another Fargo," Landgraf told The Hollywood Reporter. "Unless Noah [Hawley, Fargo's showrunner] has an idea for Fargo that he thinks he can make as good as the prior three.

"I think once people get to the end of this [season] they will find that it is thematically different. It's really about the moment we live in now."

The last time showrunner Noah Hawley brought us into his strange and twisted world of black comedy and crime was all the way back in 2015 for a mystery that jumped back in time more than 30 years.

This time around, Fargo is set in 2010 and centres on brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy (both played by an unrecognisable Ewan McGregor). After unsuccessfully trying to rob Emmit, Ray and his partner Nikki (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) become involved in a double murder case, while Emmit tried to cut his ties with a mysterious organisation he owes money to.

But, contrary to Landgraf's comments, Fargo executive producer John Cameron told Digital Spy earlier this year that he believes the show's universe could keep producing an unlimited amount of interesting stories.

"I don't think you ever run out of stories," he said "Certainly the Fargo universe seems like an infinite reservoir of interesting stories."

So, who knows what will end up happening with this one – maybe Noah Hawley will have a few ideas up his sleeve after all.

Fargo has been nominated for millions (well nearly) of awards since its debut in 2014, winning 40 out of the 164 awards it has been nominated for, including two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes.

FX broadcasts Fargo in the US, while UK viewers can watch it on Channel 4.
