Five years in the making, Farrow & Ball has launched Dead Flat, a revolutionary new paint finish that's perfect for colour drenching your home, from the hallway to the living room.

Colour drenching – the process of painting an entire space in one colour, including walls, ceilings and woodwork – is taking over the decorating world. According to Rated People, it's one of 2023's top home improvement projects with search interest up 172 per cent year-on-year, and now this contemporary painting technique is easier than ever to achieve.

Farrow & Ball's new multi-surface, ultra-matt paint finish will seamlessly extend colour across your walls, ceiling and woodwork, and even on less commonly used furniture and metal, including radiators, producing extraordinary depth and an uninterrupted flow.

A practical and aesthetic choice, Dead Flat's two per cent sheen 'dramatically minimises light bounce, so the eye only sees colour from every angle', explains Farrow & Ball. In turn, this increases how rich the colour appears, but also minimises imperfections.

'Whether you want colour saturation in a space or just to create a seamless matt flow of finish through your home, Dead Flat delivers all with its beautiful two per cent sheen and eminent practicality,' says Patrick O'Donnell, colour expert and Brand Ambassador at Farrow & Ball. 'You can create the illusion of more space in a bedroom through painted wardrobes to match the walls or hide utilitarian radiators in your chosen Dead Flat colour, it's a decorator's dream.'

Charlotte Cosby, Creative Director at Farrow & Ball, adds: 'The super matt quality has the incredible effect of making our colours look even richer, especially the darker shades.'

This paint finish is also washable, wipeable (with a Class 1 scrub rating, the highest rating possible) and scuff-resistant, making it ideal for high-traffic areas such as hallways and playrooms.

Handcrafted in Dorset, the formula has been refined by the technical experts at Farrow & Ball over the last five years. 'The ability to create such an incredibly matt and impressively durable product is thanks to a breakthrough ingredient, which is combined with a precise blend of other, quality paint ingredients to deliver the signature Farrow & Ball look with reimagined chemistry,' the paint and wallpaper makers explain.

Dead Flat is described as Farrow & Ball's most matt finish, but how does it compare?

As far as interior finishes go, Modern Emulsion is the most durable finish for walls and ceilings and is the best choice for kitchens or bathrooms. It's a matt finish with a slightly higher seven per cent sheen level. Modern Eggshell is the equivalent finish for woodwork and metal, and is the toughest Farrow & Ball interior finish offering a mid-shine look.

Then with a two per cent sheen, Estate Emulsion – ideal for lower-traffic areas – offers a signature, chalky, matt look for walls and ceilings. Its counterpart, Estate Eggshell, is a satin finish suitable for woodwork and metal.

As its name suggests, Full Gloss is an ultra-high gloss, water-based finish suitable for both interior and exterior wood and metal, as well as interior walls and ceilings. With a 95 per cent sheen, it's the highest-shine finish and is resistant to flaking, peeling and fading for up to six years.
