Fashion Trivia: Who Wore Jennifer Lopez's Famous Grammy's Dress Before Jennifer Lopez?

Despite three prior celebrity appearances, the green Versace gown didn't make history until J.Lo put it on.

Q: Everyone knows that Jennifer Lopez caused such a stir with the green Versace dress she wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards that it spurred the invention of Google Images. But did you know Lopez was not the first celebrity to wear the now-iconic gown? Or even the second?

Which stars took the provocative piece for a (less impactful) spin before her?

A: In a 2019 interview with Vogue (following her nostalgic appearance on the Versace runway), Lopez revealed that her stylist at the time, Andrea Lieberman, tried to discourage her from wearing the jungle-print number, even though it was one of only three options presented to her on the day of the Grammys. (Busy shooting "The Wedding Planner," Lopez hadn't had time for earlier fittings.)

"She was like, 'No, you can’t wear that one, somebody else has worn it.' Actually Donatella herself has worn it, one of the Spice Girls had worn it, Sandra Bullock has worn it in another color…," Lopez remembered. Lieberman's advice was sound — it's an unwritten rule of fashion that you don't hit a red carpet in a gown another star has worn recently. But Lopez had made up her mind: "I was like, 'This is what we're gonna wear. This is it.'"

Indeed, Bullock wore an orange-red version of the dress on Dec. 5, 1999, to the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. Just days later, Versace herself wore the very same green version at something called the Rock Style Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then, on Jan. 22, 2000, Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice) wore the green one to the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes. So if there's one (huge) exception to that red-carpet fashion rule, apparently it's J.Lo.
