Fastest growing jobs in the UK: Which roles saw the most demand?

Technology is constantly changing the way we see the world, and nowhere is that more obvious than in the workplace

Jobs that were not heard of a few years ago are now commonplace while workers will turn to the internet to solve a problem over a battered old reference book.

Which is why it probably comes as no surprise to learn that demand for IT engineers outstripped that of every other role over the last year, according to job site Indeed.

Researchers found that vacancies for IT engineers grew by more than a third since April 2018, making the role the fastest growing in the jobs market.

Bosses at the website said demand has "mushroomed" because a growing number of companies need "people who can install, service and protect" IT infrastructures.

Elsewhere in the tech sector, mobile developers saw job opportunities jump by nearly 30%, putting it comfortably into the top 10 fastest growing roles - unsurprising given the reliance most companies have on technology.

Bill Richards, UK Managing Director of Indeed, said: "The UK’s fastest growing jobs range from entry level roles to highly specialist positions, showing that employers generally demand a wide range of experience and skills.

"Virtually all organisations - not to mention the country as a whole - rely on IT infrastructure, and as a result the need for people who can install, service and protect it has mushroomed.

"Likewise the surging demand for mobile developers and those with advanced manufacturing skills like CNC machinists.

"While the tightness of the labour market means employers in many sectors are having to reconsider how they attract talent, all this competition is great news for jobseekers.

"It’s striking that the roles seeing the greatest growth in demand often reward highly skilled people with high salaries, even at entry level. For jobseekers the message is clear - no matter where you are in your career path, opportunity is there if you feel like a change."
