A doctor has explained simple face exercises he says can eliminate a double chin "for good". Taking to his YouTube channel, which has almost 13 million subscribers, Dr Eric Berg DC explained four ways people can tighten loose skin around their neck.

"If you do these double chin exercises on a regular basis, you will see massive improvement", he said. Explaining why people can such loose skin, he said: "As we age, we develop loose skin, especially under the neck, which does not get much exercise."

He also said: "As we age, gravity pulls down our tissues", which can cause further sagging. Losing weight can also help reduce the appearance of a double chin.

There’s a superficial and a deep layer of connective tissue called fascia under the skin on your neck, Dr Berg said. The muscles and fascia in your neck are responsible for head flexion, chin movement, and jaw movement. Exercising these muscles can make a difference.

Chin exercise #1:

The first face exercise works the muscle that pulls the jaw down when you open your mouth. In the video, he demonstrates exactly what to do and suggests doing it over and over again for 30 seconds a day.

"You're going to drop the lower jaw and open your mouth as much as possible," Dr Berg said. "This is creating tension underneath your chin. It has probably been years since you activated this muscle and it is a very neglected area of the body."

He added: "What's going to happen over time when you do these exercises is that it's going to start to tighten and the loose skin is going to go away. You're going to have a nice firmness underneath your chin."

Chin exercise #2:

The next exercise, which looks like a frown, activates the superficial fascia. You move the corners of your mouth outwards and downwards repeatedly for 30 seconds at a time.

"So this facial expression is going to activate slightly different muscles underneath your chin. This is going to activate more of the superficial fascia just underneath the skin and it's going to focus more on the fascia directly underneath your chin versus lower in your neck."

The third exercise creates an elongation and deep stretch of the fascia - again, do this regularly for 30 seconds. "For this one, you're going to tilt your head all the way back and then push your jaw forward or upward as much as you can," Dr Berg explained.

By doing this exercise, he says you are stretching all the fascia out and elongating the muscles. "When we're pushing our jaw forward and getting that last very important stretch you have to realise that all this fascia is attached not just to your chin, but it wraps over underneath the bottom part of your lip into your face," he added.

"So that's something very interesting about fascia, it covers a broad base area and this is why we have to take all the slack out and then create as much motion as we can to create this elongation."

Chin exercise #4:

The fourth and final exercise allows for head flexion to strengthen and tone the fascia. To do this, you need to lie on your bed, on your back, with just your head hanging off the edge.

You then lift your head up, as close to your chest as possible, before lowering it back down. You do this repeatedly for 30 seconds.

"This is going to work this tissue, really put more blood supply into it and create more contraction and toning of the deeper fascia." Der Berg told viewers. "Some people will be very surprised when they do this how weak their neck is. You just don't work this area of the body very often."

Dr Berg stressed: "Remember, If you don't use it, you lose it! Stretching, strengthening, and tightening the fascia with these simple double chin exercises can eliminate a turkey neck!"

The video, which has been watched more than one million times, have thousands of comments from impressed viewers. One person called Nathalie said: "So I have started doing this for 3 days and my loose skin under my chin has tightened by 50%…!! No exaggeration… I am amazed and will keep doing these twice daily. Thank you!"

Mike added: "I am a Speech Pathologist specializing in facial palsy. Excellent info that I preach to all who want to maintain that youthful look as we age!"

Lisa wrote: "As a nurse I studied anatomy and physiology. I figured out these things for myself and have been doing facial exercises for years. I can back up his claims that this works. At 62 now, I have very little drop in jowls, and only because I got lazy, and my neck is not droopy at all.

"For me it's not about looking young, it is about being fit and living healthy and pain free. Use it or lose it is a very true statement."
