Father and sons' Sutton Coldfield curry house named 'best Indian restaurant'
A traditional Indian restaurant that has been serving home-cooked curries 'made from scratch' in Sutton Coldfield for ten years has won an award for being one of the best in the country.
Ramadan in Curdworth was named Restaurant of the Year for the West Midlands at at the 2024 Asian Curry Awards. The popular Kingsbury Road curry house is run by Joynal Abdin and his three sons.
They fought off fierce competition from Pushkar on Broad Street and Zindiya in Moseley, who also made it to the finals of the awards, which are so highly-regarded within the industry that they have been dubbed the 'Curry Oscars'.

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Joynal said that while so many Indian restaurants have moved away from conventional dishes and cooking methods, Ramadan remains proudly traditional. "We are a traditional Indian restaurant that offers desi home cooking," he said.
"Everything is made from scratch. You see more and more Indian restaurants changing and losing their traditional dishes and roots. This isn't us."
"Winning this award means the world to us as," he added. "I have worked in the food and hospitality industry for over 30 years. I have witnessed the highs and lows of the hospitality industry and the struggles we face day in and day out. Winning this award truly reflects what Ramadan has achieved over the last ten years and we couldn't have done it without the support of our employees and all our customers."
Ramadan's menu includes a range of classic curries, baltis, biryanis and tandoori dishes, but is best-known for its Tawa dishes and low-fat options. The restaurant also offers 20 per cent off the price of takeaways and a special Sunday offer as a way to 'support customers'.
Joynal said: "We know the cost of living has affected everyone and through these discounts we are able to support our customers whilst still enjoying their favourite food from us."
Ramadan will be open throughout the festive period, including on Christmas day. Owners have plans to modernise the restaurant's décor and add new items to the menu, while sticking to their traditional values.
The winners of this year's Asian Curry Awards were announced at a gala dinner held at London's Grosvenor House on Sunday, November 17, hosted by BBC news anchor Samantha Simmonds. They were chosen by a panel of judges from a shortlist of finalists voted for by the spice-loving public.
