FC Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich LIVE! Lewandowski goal - Champions League result, match stream and latest updates today

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich - LIVE!

Barcelona could hardly have asked for a tougher assignment as they began their first Champions League campaign of the post-Lionel Messi era by hosting German giants Bayern Munich.

Messi ended his 21-year-long association with the Catalan club when he joined PSG this summer, with the Spanish club’s financial woes meaning they were unable to tie their talisman to a new contract.

The move sent shockwaves through European football and has dampened expectations about what Ronald Koeman’s side may be able to achieve this season, but this was still a disappointing start as Bayern cruised to a 3-0 win at the Nou Camp.

Thomas Muller set the German champions on their way before Robert Lewandowski took centre-stage, scoring twice as Julian Nagelsmann watched his side take all three points in his first European game since taking charge in the summer.

Key Points

  • Prediction: Barcelona 1-3 Bayern

GOAL! Lewandowski doubles up

21:44 , Daniel Gallan

85mins: Lewandowski doubles up

That gives the scoreline a more accurate reflection. Gnabry smashes the base of the left post and just like he did with his first, Lewandowski reacts first, collects the ball, takes a touch to shift it to his left and hits the target. Ter Stegen gets a big touch on it but can’t steer it away as the net bulges for a third time.

It’s no less than Bayern deserve and is simultaneously no less than Barce deserve. This has been a rout of a once mighty empire.

Bayern have been sloppy

21:39 , Daniel Gallan

80mins: Feels strange to say it given their 2-0 lead over Barcelona, but had Bayern been more clinical they might have had three or four.

Substitute Gnabry, on for Musiala, steams down the right and, with options in the middle and Barca light at the back, should do better than a low cross that doesn’t beat the first man.

Bayern are sleep walking towards their win as Muller comes off for Sabitzer who makes his debut in the competition.

Sane is off too and on comes Coman.

Game plodding along

21:31 , Daniel Gallan

73mins: Bayern seem content to head back to Bavaria with a 2-0 win (though don’t bet against them grabbing another goal) and Barca look incapable of doing anything about it.

As such the game is meandering at a slow pace with Bayern doing all the controlling and Barca doing a lot of inept huffing.

Another Barca teenager is on the field. 17-year-old Alejandro Martinez is on for Jordi Alba who looks absolutely knackered.

Coutinho on

21:24 , Daniel Gallan

67mins: Barcelona paid Liverpool around £142million for the Brazilian. They probably had games like this in mind.

He’s on for the ineffective Luuk de Jong.

Bayern make a change

21:23 , Daniel Gallan

66mins: Pavard is off and Hernades is on.

Double switch for Barca

21:18 , Daniel Gallan

60mins: It probably won’t make any difference (or will it?) but Barca have made two changes:

Yusef Demir is on for Sergi Roberto and Gavi has taken the place of his skipper Sergio Busquets.

Both oncoming substitutes are teenagers. Interestingly Coutinho remains on the bench.

GOAL! Lewandowski doubles lead

21:16 , Daniel Gallan

56mins: GOAL Lewandowski doubles with a tap in

The goal machine keeps churning them out and it was coming.

A fizzing strike from the edge of the area off the boot of Musiala cannons against the left upright. Ter Stegen is beaten as he dives and so is powerless to do anything as it falls for Lewandowski who reacts quickest and stabs it into an empty net.

That’s almost certainly that as far as the contest is concerned. The question now is how many can the Germans score?

Barca midfield walking

21:12 , Daniel Gallan

55mins: They look like a beaten team. Of course they can’t be running around every single second of the match, but there is a distinct lack of urgency from the former superpower of the game.

Ter Stegen keeps his team in it

21:10 , Daniel Gallan

52mins: Sane wriggles and worms an opening, he positions the ball on his left foot not eights yards from goal and lets loose.

But Ter Stegen doesn’t flinch and stays low to make a firm save with his boot. The home side are still in the contest thanks to their immense goalkeeper.

Busquets catches one sweetly

21:08 , Daniel Gallan

50mins: Tell you what, that first time left footed strike from Busquets from range looked like it was heading on target.

Muller sticks a leg out and it goes for a corner, and if we’re honest Neuer probably had it covered. But there is some life yet in this Barca side and it’s been injected by their skipper.

We’re back. Barca need an extra gear. Can they find it?

21:03 , Daniel Gallan

45mins: Barca need an extra gear. Can they find it?

Half time: Barcelona 0-1 Bayern Munich

20:49 , Daniel Gallan

Half time: Barcelona 0-1 Bayern Munich

Thomas Muller’s deflected strike has given Bayern Munich a deserved lead. Not because they German champions have been at their imperious best - they haven’t needed to be - but because their opponents have been so toothless that parity would have felt like an injustice.

Barca’s back three have defended with stoicism but in front of them there has been a stark lack of imagination and flair.

Something has to give, something has to change or else the loyal fans who have been allowed in this monumental stadium will start to turn. The thing is, Barca just don’t have an obvious Plan B.

Catch you in a few.

Something is not quite right with Barca

20:44 , Daniel Gallan

42mins: Maybe it’s simply a lack of the star quality we’ve come to associate with this side but it looks so pedestrian, so predictable, so inept. (Forgive the previous post, I was trying to put a positive spin on things).

It’s just so comfortable for Bayern. Now the Germans have the ball and float a cross inside the box towards the left. It comes to nothing but they look a lot more threatening that their counterparts.

That’s more like it from Barca

20:40 , Daniel Gallan

38mins: Squint your eyes and it might have been Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. Ok, maybe not, but that delightful move from Depay, Pedri and Frankie de Jongh is well worked down the left. The cross in for the onrushing Luuk de Jong is too high and he can’t get anywhere near it.

But as we’ve said, it’s still Barcelona and there is quality on the pitch.

GOAL! Muller opens scoring

20:37 , Daniel Gallan

34mins: GOAL! Thomas Muller

A wicked deflection from Muller’s shot means Ter Stegen is flat footed and powerful to do anything else but watch the net bulge behind him.

It wasn’t vintage, but it did feel inevitable. You worry for Barca now as they’re increasingly looking like the second best team.

Barca holding on

20:32 , Daniel Gallan

31mins: Is that Bayern incompetence of Barca tenacity? Either way it’s still 0-0 as the home side continue to scramble and the away side continues to misfire.

A break down the left is worked centrally and into the area. Muller takes aim but a strong block denies him. It bounces about but just won’t fall for a man in white.

Barca escape... just about

20:28 , Daniel Gallan

27mins: Bayern come close as neat passing moves the ball right to 18-year-old Jamal Musiala who delays his shot just enough for the recover tackle to come in and prevent it reaching the goal.

Barca scramble it away and stay.

Bayern inching their way closer

20:24 , Daniel Gallan

23mins: A definite balance of power has emerged and it lies with the Germans. They over complicate things a touch as they work their way through Barca players but get stuck before a shot is fired.

Barca fans are starting to whistle. They’re not used to seeing their team struggle to get their foot on the ball.

Ter Stegen keeps Sane out

20:21 , Daniel Gallan

19mins: A stinging drive from Leroy Sane smashes the firm gloves of Marc-André ter Stegen.

Correction. It hits the ‘keeper’s face! Kept it out though.

It’s from a well worked move that goes left and then back into the box on the right. Sane chests it and hits the dropping ball with his left foot. It’s destined for the near corner but the Barca No 1 shuts the door.

Both sides jabbing

20:15 , Daniel Gallan

13mins: To use the well trodden boxing analogy, these two heavyweights are feeling each other out with a series of jabs. Looking for an opening.

Leon Goretzka gets half a gap on the edge of the Barca area but his tame shot is blocked and spoons to the ‘keeper.

Barca go upfield and Sergi Roberto opts to hit a bouncing ball from a wide cross on the volley. He can’t get his foot high enough so it sails over the bar.

Terrific defending from Araújo

20:12 , Daniel Gallan

11mins: Robert Lewandowski is unleashed in the box but Barca’s Ronald Araújo handles the goalscoring machine with strength and poise.

Will keep an eye on that little battle as it develops.

Sane hits the wall

20:09 , Daniel Gallan

9mins: Leroy Sané hits the wall as he goes for power over placement.

It’s still Barcelona

20:08 , Daniel Gallan

7mins: They may be without Lionel Messi (hadn’t you heard?) but this is still Barcelona at home in the Champions League. That has to count for something even against the mighty Bayern Munich.

They’re playing well so far.

But a free kick within range for Bayern could mean trouble here.

First man in the book

20:06 , Daniel Gallan

5mins: It’s Joshua Kimmich whose late lunge means he’s shown yellow.

Fullbacks v wing-backs

20:06 , Daniel Gallan

4mins: It’s a clash of two systems. Barca have gone with a back three and two wing-backs in front of them providing width.

Bayern have gone with a back four with their fullbacks bombing up field.

We’re we go

New Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann takes charge of his side in the Champions League for the first time tonight, and has also been having his say on the effect of Lionel Messi’s departure on his opponents.

“They’ve no longer got someone as extravagant as Messi, but they have other players who can make a difference,” the 39-year-old told his pre-match press conference. “We are prepared for everything.

“I’m not of the opinion that they are a lot worse off now. [Whether we are] favourites or not favourites is always more of a media topic. Two world clubs are meeting.

“On the one hand, the form on the day will decide, but on the other hand, [there is] motivation - and that one will be extremely high with us.”

Busquets: We can win without Messi

19:09 , Malik Ouzia

So, Barcelona start a Champions League campaign without Lionel Messi for the first time since the 2003/04 season, but midfielder Sergio Busquets believes they still have what it takes to compete at the highest level without their talisman.

“Anything can happen in football,” the midfielder said this week. “Chelsea won the Champions League last season and were not favourites.

“The important thing is the collective level and we know that we do not have Leo or his individual qualities. We are here, excited and aware of the difficulty, but we have a lot of ambition and we want to win.”

Standard Sport prediction

Barcelona have steadied the ship following a tumultuous summer with an unbeaten start to the LaLiga season but Bayern pose a different threat altogether and after a bit of a sluggish start of their own in the Bundesliga, they have looked rampant in the past two games.
