There's a changing of the guard at Fear the Walking Dead.

Dave Erickson has been helming the AMC prequel series for these three seasons, but the season three finale was his swan song as showrunner.

Now that his reign is over, Erickson has revealed his seven-season plan for Fear the Walking Dead – and it's brilliantly dark and twisted.

It's worth pointing out that the new showrunners (Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg) will have their own ideas on where to take the show and its characters, so these aren't spoilers.

In short, Erickson had it mapped out in his head that Madison (Kim Dickens) would – by the end of the series – turn into a Governor or Negan-type full-blown villain.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed that Madison would have definitely lived until the end.

"The thing that's interesting to me, and one of the questions I asked myself and asked Robert Kirkman very early on was, of the people in our group, who do you see becoming the Governor? Of our group, who could become a Negan?" he said.

"That's interesting to me, to watch an evolution of a character and start with them as a hero, and bleed that into antihero, and bleed that into full-on villain. It would have been interesting.

"In terms of the final conflict within the family, it would have been key. For me, there's a lot left for Madison specifically."

Erickson added that he saw Madison, Nick (Frank Dillane), and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) as the main characters, and he would have explored the family dynamics as Madison continued to descend down the dark path she has already been on during season three.

It's a shame that he won't be around to realise this vision, because it sounds like a really intriguing series arc.
