Fear the Walking Dead returned for its fifth season with a bang, but there was also an intriguing Rick Grimes Easter egg that may have teased a connection to the wider universe.

The survivors – including Morgan Jones (Lennie James), Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey), and Althea (Maggie Grace) – crash-landed in the opening minutes of the season premiere, and were forced to defend themselves as numerous walkers honed in on their location.

They all survived, but there was one heavily-armoured walker who proved to be a nightmare to deal with, until he was impaled.

Later in the episode, Althea wanted to head back to the site of the plane crash.

She did so alone, at night and in the rain (always a good idea). And she scratched at the surface of a potentially big story, as the heavily-armoured walker wore a very familiar symbol on him – three interlocking circles.

If the symbol looks familiar, then that's because you've seen it on the helicopter that took Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) away in The Walking Dead season 9 episode 5. See below:

Unfortunately, before Althea could learn any more, she was kidnapped by presumably another member of that group.

The big question is whether this is just a neat Easter egg or if this will eventually tie into the upcoming Rick spin-off movie.

Elsewhere in the episode, fans saw Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades) for the first time since the season 3 finale, and it looks like he will be seeing Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) very soon...
