Feather Star Hitches a Ride on Hermit Crab in Port Phillip Bay

A keen underwater photographer captured the “unbelievable” moment a star feather rode on the back of a hermit crab, sharing video to her Instagram account on December 15.

Jules Casey, a freediver based on the Mornington Peninsula, regularly captures underwater footage in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, and said in an Instagram post that she had “never seen a feather star like this before”.

“I was hoping it would take off and swim but it was content to hang on to see where this hermit crab would take it,” she said.

Casey often posts footage of what she sees below the waves at Port Phillip Bay to her OneBreathDiver Instagram account, where she has over 90,000 followers.
