Iraqi Federal Police engaged in a series of rooftop firefights with Islamic State militants near the historic Al-Nuri Mosque in the Old City of Mosul on April 11. Iraqi media said five militants were killed and a number of weapons were seized.

Otherwise known as the Great Mosque, Al Nuri served as the backdrop for Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s declaration of the caliphate in July 2014, and has remained a strategic compound in IS-controlled Mosul in the time since.

Iraqi forces have struggled to make additional gains in Mosul’s Old City in recent weeks, in large part due to an escalation in suicide bombings and other attacks against military and civilian targets in western Mosul.
