Ferocious blaze rips through Edinburgh flat as resident rushed to hospital


A terrifying flat blaze engulfed an Edinburgh flat in the early hours of the morning.

Shocked Saughton Mains residents captured the moment a fire ripped through a bottom floor flat on Saturday September 28 at around 5.50am.

A video shared with Edinburgh Live showed hero firefighters tending to the incident as flames can be seen flicking out of the window of the flat.

Thick black smoke can be seen rising into the sky while emergency services safely evacuated residents.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reports paramedics treated five casualties at the scene of the fire while a further resident was taken to hospital for treatment.

Originally three pump appliances and a height appliance attended the scene but later the incident was escalated with a further three pump alliances responding.

Pauline Stevens, who lives locally, said the community was filled with ‘blue flashing lights’ and commended the firefighters for their brave work, describing them as 'amazing.'

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call at around 5.54am. Three pumps and a height appliance initially attended but the incident was escalated with six pump appliances responding to the scene.

"Six casualties were reported with one person taken to hospital for further treatment. The fire was extinguished and one appliance remains on site but is not actively working."

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
