Newcastle’s Theatre Royal has unveiled plans to transform a former late night cocktail venue into a festive cafe bar.

Work is under way to convert the former Nitehawks nightspot into Newcastle’s newest Christmas-themed venue, named after its address as simply 100 Grey Street – one of two leisure sites the theatre is poised to open. Theatre bosses are working with MawsonKerr Architects and Design North to transform the empty bar into 100 Grey Street, which will serve up a range of seasonally themed drinks and treats.

The cafe bar will open at the end of November and will operate over the festive period in line with the eight-week run of the pantomime, The Little Mermaid. The menu includes drinks from local and regional suppliers, including Baristocracy Coffee based in North Shields and Eden Fine Wines from Cleckheaton, alongside alcoholic and soft drinks from Washington-based LWC Drinks. Following the festive opening the theatre plans to develop seasonal offers in 100 Grey Street in collaboration with local, independent businesses.

It is also working with architects and designers on transforming the former Dat Bar site at 11 Market Street, just beside the theatre’s prominent entrance, into a new space, as part of moves to be open to more people more of the time. Work is set to starth there early next year.

“We are continually looking for new and innovative ways to diversify our income beyond theatre ticket sales and 100 Grey Street offers the ideal opportunity to explore a number of exciting ideas and potential partnerships. Whilst presenting the very best touring productions on our stage remains at the forefront of what we do best, as a registered charity, it is vital that we generate additional income streams and developing our off-stage commercial activities enables us to support our broader charitable objectives.”
