Fiery Crash Involving Bus and Fuel Truck Kills at Least 16 in West Ukraine

At least 16 people were killed and 12 were injured in a fiery collision involving a fuel truck, a minivan, and a bus carrying 35 passengers on a highway in Ukraine’s western Rivne Oblast on Tuesday evening, May 3, Ukrainian officials said.

The State Emergency Service (SES) said the crash happened on the M06 highway in the village of Sytne, about halfway between the cities of Lviv and Rivne.

According to Ukraine’s National Police, a preliminary investigation found that the driver of a Mercedes Vito minibus had swerved into the path of oncoming traffic and struck a fuel truck, the impact of which pushed the fuel truck into the other lane, where it collided with a bus, crashed into a ditch and exploded, police said. The fire caused by the blast spread through all three vehicles, destroying them, they said.
