Fighter jet spotted flying over North Yorkshire

A fighter jet has been flying over North Yorkshire today.

If you were catching the sights at the South Gare Breakwater, on the coast of Redcar, you may have seen the jet darting across the skies over the North Sea. Aero L-159 ALCA aircraft took off from Teesside at 12.08pm on Tuesday, November 26.

The jet then travelled across County Durham before flying over the North Sea, before landing back down at 1.09pm. The plane, registration number G-DKNB, is owned by aviation firm Draken, based at Teesside Airport, which has a whole fleet of combat aircraft.

Draken run a privately contracted training service for fighter jets, assisting the RAF and Tyhpoon fighter pilots. Colloquially known as the 'Honey Badger', The Aero L-159 ALCA is an advanced trainer and subsonic light combat aircraft, produced in the Czech Republic.

The jet's first flight was in 1997 and was manufactured by Aero Vodochody. The jets were built as part of an initiative to replace Soviet-era fighter planes.

Draken has a fleet of 26 aircraft. It currently owns five L159s, fourteen FA20s, two DA42s and five BN2Ts.
