2018 is the first year figure skaters will be allowed to use music with lyrics in Olympic competition.
Jimmy Ma got that memo.
The 22-year-old American took the ice Thursday night in the men’s short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships with a flourish, skating to Lil Jon and DJ Snake club classic “Turn Down for What.”

The Nutcracker suite, that is not.
No matter. The crowd dug it. The announcers liked it (or some of them did, it seemed). The Internet loves it.
Alas, we likely won’t get to hear a repeat of Lil Jon on ice in Pyeongchang as Ma finds himself in 11th place after Thursday’s short program. Heavy favorite Nathan Chen lived up his billing, sitting in first place with a dominant score in San Jose.
However Ma finishes after Saturday’s free skate, he can hold his head high having set the tone for a new era of music in the figure skating world.
