Fire breaks out at block of flats in Plymouth

A person had to be rescued after a fire broke out at block of flats in Plymouth this evening, Thursday, May 30. Emergency services were called to Vauxhall Street, in the historic Barbican area of the city, at 7.44pm to reports of a blaze in a second-floor flat.

Fire crews from Greenbank, Camel's Head and Plymstock rushed to the scene alongside police officers and paramedics. The firefighters used safety jets, hose reel jets, thermal imaging cameras and breathing apparatus to extinguish the flames.

It has been confirmed that one resident was rescued by the fire crews before being handed over to paramedics. They were reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation.

Pictures from the scene show a major emergency response on Notte Street, close to where the B3240 road becomes Vauxhall Street. A number of police cars and fire engines can be seen parked on the road.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 7.44pm we were called to attend a domestic fire in a second floor flat of a property on Vauxhall Street, Plymouth. Four appliances from Greenbank, Camel’s Head and Plymstock attended the incident and two safety jets, two hose reel jets, thermal imaging cameras and four breathing apparatus were used in extinguishing the fire.

"One resident has been rescued by our crews and handed over to the ambulance service suffering from smoke inhalation. A positive pressure ventilation fan has been used to help clear the property of smoke."
