Fire breaks out at Manchester Christie hospital building

A fire has broken out at one of the buildings belonging to The Christie Hospital.

The incident is still ongoing according to the local fire service.

The blaze is currently engulfing the Cancer Research building, which is next to the hospital.

It is believed the fire started on the roof of the Paterson Building this morning.

Some on social media have captured pictures and footage of the fire.

A spokesperson for the fire service dealing with the blaze told the Manchester Evening News: "We were called at 10.36am this morning to a building fire at the Christie on Wilmslow Road.

"Five fire engines are currently dealing with the fire. The fire service were not able to confirm where the fire had started, only that the incident was still ongoing."

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the fire includes a three-storey office block and laboratory.

The service said in a statement: "At 10.36am on Wednesday (April 26) the fire service was called to a building fire at Christie Hospital, Wilmslow Road, Manchester.

"Five fire engines and an aerial ladder are at the scene.

"Firefighters are wearing breathing apparatus and using jets and hose reels to extinguish a fire involving a three-storey office block and labs."

A statement from the Christie Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "There has been a fire on the roof of the Paterson Institute.

"All associated areas have been evacuated, including any patient areas. The fire service is on site.

"For staff and patients, if they have not already been evacuated, need to carry on as normal.

"Any patients who are attending for treatment need to attend as normal and access the hospital via the Palatine Road entrance.

"Patients should park in the multi-storey car park off Palatine Road. All the associated areas have been evacuated including any patient areas.

"Patients should park in the multi-storey car park off Palatine Road."

The police were called because of the fire. 

The Greater Manchester Police told the MEN they were called to the Oak Road entrance of the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute building at 10.43am.

They said that several roads surrounding the site and The Christie Hospital grounds have been shut.
