Dawlish Fire Station said in a post on Facebook: "Today Dawlish Fire Station attended a fire aboard the Starcross to Exmouth Ferry The challenge we had was being able to reach the fire and also to prevent an environmental disaster.
"Two members of our crew, joined by two fire fighters from Middlemoor Fire Station tackled the fire from on board a separate harbour boat, using equipment from that vessel. We managed to get the fire under control and were then joined by a firefighting crew from Exmouth Fire Station who were on board the Exmouth Life Boat.
"A crew from Newton Abbot Fire Station also attended along with their hazmat team. The fire was brought under further control.
"We send our best wishes to the ferry team and hope they are able to bounce back before the season starts once more."
