People in a town on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border awoke to a commotion overnight as fire crews tackled a blaze at a former care home. Firefighters were called to the former Hazelwood care home in Skeavingtons Lane, Ilkeston, at around 12.50am on Monday (November 25).

Crews quickly located a fire in one side of the building and firefighters used two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze. A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters from Ilkeston and Heanor were called to a derelict building on Skeavingtons Lane in Ilkeston at 12.49am today.

"Upon arrival, fire crews located a fire in the left-hand side of the building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire. An investigation into the cause of the fire determined the most likely cause to be deliberate. Derbyshire Constabulary have been notified."
