Firefighters were sent to a North Staffordshire supermarket after smoke had been spotted coming from an ATM. Two engines were scrambled to Morrisons in Leek where a 'thermal scan' was carried out.

As reported by StokeonTrentLive, bosses from Morrisons say smoke began to emit from one of the cash points after a security measure was triggered. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called just before 8.50am.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "We were called to the Morrisons store on Newcastle Road in Leek following reports of a cash machine being on fire.

"Two crews attended the scene and carried out a thermal scan of the area. No fire was discovered and the incident was found to have been caused by a smoke cloak.

"Crews left shortly before 10am."

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: "Our ATM at Morrisons Leek triggered a security measure this morning, which caused some smoke to be emitted from the machine. The ATM is currently not working but we are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible with our maintenance partners."
