A fire at a coffee shop in Serangoon Central was put out early on Saturday (14 May), with one person taken to hospital.

Online videos showed flames from the fire had spread several storeys up from the coffee shop on the first floor of 261 Serangoon Central Drive.

In response to queries from Yahoo News Singapore, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it had been alerted to the fire at 1.20am, which involved the coffee shop's kitchen exhaust ducting.

The fire was extinguished by the SCDF using one water jet.

The SCDF said 20 people had self-evacuated before their arrival, and one person was brought to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, the SCDF said.

"SCDF would like to remind the public, especially stall holders, on the prevention of KED fires with the following fire safety tips as depicted in the infographic."

The incident in Serangoon comes a day after a fire at a Bedok North Avenue 2 HDB block claimed three lives, including a toddler.
