Fire-Stricken Container Ship Begins to Sink Off Sri Lanka Coast

The X-Press Pearl container ship, ablaze for almost two weeks off the coast of Colombo, Sri Lanka, began to sink on June 2, according to local media.

This footage, filmed by the Sri Lanka Air Force, shows parts of the vessel’s hull submerged below the water.

The ship was carrying 25 tonnes of nitric acid among other cargo when the fire broke out on May 20. The situation worsened on May 25 with a large explosion.

All 25 crew were evacuated, with two hospitalized with injuries. The fire resulted in eight containers falling into the sea, according to the Colombo Page.
