It so often looks like the last act of shameless toadying – like he might call them back for another shot – but fired Apprentice contestant Kayode Damali has called it out for what it is.

It being the act of thanking Lord Sugar for the ‘opportunity’ of being fired from The Apprentice.

Kayode crashed out of the show last night, after falling foul of Sugar during the urban gardening task.

Since the first episode of the series, candidates have shuffled out of the boardroom after having the businessman point his firing finger at them, with the often garbled words ‘thank you for the opportunity’ tumbling out of their mouths as they go.

But not Kayode, who last night muttered something undecipherable (but likely not all that polite) as he exited the boardroom.

“It’s no disrespect to Lord Sugar. I want him to know I very much respect him for his achievements,” he told MailOnline.

“But those people that say ‘Thank You’ after they’re fired… why thank him for firing you?

“It’s like this Apprentice trend, to say thanks after getting fired. And to say ‘Thank you for the opportunity.’ I thank myself for the opportunity. I applied and got on the show. You need to thank you.’

“No, I’m not happy I got fired – it wasn’t me who was the failure in that task. I shouldn’t be sat here doing this interview!” he went on.

“I got to week seven out of 10, I was 10th out of 16 – that’s not what I wanted and didn’t think I should have been fired. The buck got passed. In that boardroom, everyone just goes along with what everyone else says.

“Everyone was trying to say it was me, point the finger, and so everyone else points the finger.”

He also crowned himself ‘the public’s favourite’ during the interview, saying that he’d kept tabs on what viewers on social media were saying about it.
