Firefighter Killed as Wildfires Spread in Portugal's Aveiro Region

At least one person was killed after wildfires spread in Portugal’s Aveiro region on Monday, September 16, with footage showing smoke choking the town of Albergaria.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said a firefighter had died while battling the fire in Oliveira de Azemeis, near Albergaria.

A further 17 people were injured by the wildfires, including four firefighters, after the blaze spread from Oliveira de Azemeis to Albergaria-a-Velh, local media reported.

Almost 200 firefighters and 59 vehicles were assigned to the fire in Albergaria alone, officials said.

The Aveiro region and seven other districts were placed under yellow alerts due to high temperatures by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere. Credit: @andres78320 via Storyful
