Firefighters Battle Apple Fire as Blaze Scorches More Than 20,000 Acres

Firefighters battled to contain the Apple Fire near Beaumont in California’s Riverside County on August 1, as the fire grew to over 20,000 acres and forced evacuation orders affecting thousands of people.

The fire was first reported at around 6 pm on July 31 in a hilly area east of Los Angeles. Much of the fire was in steep, rugged terrain that made access difficult for firefighting vehicles, according to the San Bernardino National Forest service.
