Firefighters battle deliberate changing room fire in Plymouth

A deliberate fire was set at a sports facility in Plymouth this evening, Monday, September 23. Emergency services were called to the scene of a fire in a sports facility after smoke filled a changing room at the premises.

Three fire engines were called to the scene in the Staddiscombe area of Plymstock around 6.10pm. Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire within a sports changing room in the building.

Crews investigated and worked to quickly extinguish the fire, which caused 10 per cent damage to the building. The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.

A statement from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire control received a call to a smoke filled room within a sports changing rooms attached to a retail premise in the Staddiscombe area of Plymstock.

"Fire control mobilised 3 appliances from Greenbank and Camels Head as well as a supporting officer. Once in attendance, crews confirmed a small fire and were using 2 breathing apparatus, 1 hose reel jet and 1 thermal imaging camera to investigate and extinguish.

"Crews confirmed small fire within building which caused 10% smoke damage to the building. Crews used 2 breathing apparatus, 1 hose reel jet, 1 thermal imaging camera and positive pressure ventilation fan.

"This fire was deemed to be deliberate and was left in the hands of responsible persons on scene."
