Firefighters cut driver free from van after crash with HGV shuts the A1

A van driver had to be cut free from his vehicle after it was involved in a crash on the A1 this morning.

Multiple emergency services attended the incident near Scotch Corner at around 6am today (Saturday, September 24).

An HGV and a van were involved in the crash.

All lanes were closed on the A1 northbound before junction 56 B6275, Barton, and traffic queues built up.

Fire crews had to cut a person out of the crashed van but luckily they were not seriously injured.

Bob Hoskins, group manager for the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: The incident involved an HGV and a van.

"Crews worked to release the driver of the van who sustained no serious injuries."

There was a large emergency presence at the scene, with fire crews from Richmond, Colburn and the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service attending along with the North Yorkshire police and ambulance services.

Traffic has now returned to normal following the incident.
