Firefighters Drive Through Smoke and Flames to Protect Homes on Sydney Outskirts

Firefighters faced dangerous conditions as flare-ups around New South Wales caused a series of emergency warning to be triggered on Thursday, December 5.

On Friday morning, there were 100 fires burning around the state, including 43 which were uncontained, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

This video shows firefighters from Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade driving down a smoke-covered road with flames flaring from both sides.

In a Facebook post, the brigade said the footage was of its crew “responding to protect properties under threat” in Oakdale, on Sydney’s southwest fringe, on Thursday.

The nearby Green Wattle Creek fire forced evacuations in the area as it threatened homes in several suburbs and townships. The fire has burned through more than 35,000 hectares and remained out of control on Friday. Credit: Silverdale Rural Fire Brigade via Storyful
