Firefighters race to huge blaze at former Scots primary school

Firefighters have raced to a huge blaze at a former Scots primary school.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is currently in attendance at the former Gartsherrie School on Gartsherrie Road, in Coatbridge, after a fire broke out earlier tonight.

Footage from the scene shows flames engulfing the building and thick clouds of grey smoke billowing into the sky.

Residents in the local area have been advised to remain indoors and to shut windows as a precaution.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: "We were alerted at 7.45pm to a fire in a derelict building on Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge. We mobilised 3 appliances and one high-reach appliance to the scene. There are no casualties and we are still in attendance."

A statement from Police Scotland read: "Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge is closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to an ongoing fire at a derelict building. There are no reports of any injuries. As a precaution, we are advising local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows and doors closed."

There were plans for the former Gartsherrie Primary building to be redeveloped into offices for the neighbouring haulage business after it was closed by North Lanarkshire Council back in 2010.
