Fires and Tear Gas as Protesters and Police Clash in Melbourne

Pro-Palestine protesters lit fires and pulled down fences and police fired tear gas into the crowd, as demonstrations turned violent on the streets of Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday, September 11.

Thousands of anti-war activists gathered in the city to rally against the Land Forces expo, being held at the Melbourne Convention Centre, local media reported.

Riot police fired pellets of tear gas at protesters as they chanted “this is not a police state.”

Demonstrators also tore down fencing that had been erected to keep activists away from the exhibition centre’s main entrance, according to the report.
