It's fair to say that The Only Way Is Essex star Pete Wicks hasn't had the best track record when it comes to reality TV dating shows.

After coming away from Celebs Go Dating with nothing more than a bromance with Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson – not to mention the ups and downs of his love life on TOWIE – the star is now checking into the First Dates Hotel in a bid to find love.

But after chatting to one guest by the First Dates pool, it looks like Pete doesn't actually need to jet off to Italy to find romance because it's all happening a little bit closer to home.

While talking to a guest named Amanda poolside, she questioned him on what he's doing at the Hotel.

"I'm 30 years old, I've done a lot of dating," he began, only for Amanda to interrupt: "I know, we've seen it. On live TV!"

Amanda then went on to offer him some "motherly advice", sharing the key to finding a relationship back in the UK.

"Singles night in Lidl on a Thursday," she revealed. "Seriously. They do it in Asda as well on a Wednesday."

While Pete wasn't too sure whether or not Amanda was being serious – "are you winding me up? Don't set me up like that, I'm a gullible character!" – viewers are certainly hoping it'll catch on:

As for Pete's actual date – you know, the one that didn't take place in a supermarket – he went for dinner with 35-year-old Emily, and it wasn't long before he was declaring her an "angel" after they bonded over their Scottish accents, love of their family and Emily's admitting that she's not one to judge people without knowing them.

"She's beautiful," he admitted afterwards. "Really, really, really attractive. I don't know what it is about her, but there's an energy about her that I really like.

"I feel like I was just myself on the date, and I feel like that was all she was really interested in, was me as a person, and that was really refreshing."

They both admitted they'd like to see each other again romantically, and they shared a little kiss before Pete walked Emily back to her room too.

Unfortunately, the show soon revealed that the fireworks between the couple fizzled out after they returned home from Italy, so maybe we'll be seeing Pete in Lidl after all.
