First example of all-new Toyota Supra sells for $2.1 million at auction

Barret-Jackson auction sees first example of the new sports car sold with proceeds going to charity

The new Toyota Supra is once again making headlines — with the first example selling at auction for $2.1m (circa. £1.6m).

Sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction in Arizona, USA, the first Supra to roll off the production line will be heading to car collectors Jeanette and John Staluppi. All proceeds from the sale will go to charities American Heart Association and The Bob Woodruff Foundation.

This particular example of the long-awaited Japanese sports car is also complete in a one-of-one specification. A matte grey paint makes up the base colour, while the mirror caps and interior are bright red — with black wheels completing the package.

On top of that, the engine bay has been signed by Toyota chief executive Akio Toyoda while the winning bidders will also receive a full race suit worn during the final development laps of the Supra before production was signed off.

The Supra wasn’t the only first-of-kind vehicle to be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson sale. The first example of the new Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 went for $1.1m (circa. £850k) while the Ford GT Heritage Edition number one sold for $2.5m (circa. £1.9m).

When the Supra eventually comes to the UK market though, don’t expect to pay such a price for the car — it’s set to retail from £52,695. The first 24 people to place a deposit for the car have also been offered the chance to purchase the A90 Edition car, which brings a unique matte grey paint and black alloy wheels – available from £56,495.
