First images of brothers who left man in coma after ‘vicious’ Sparkbrook revenge attack with weapons

The first images of two brothers who carried out a brutal ‘revenge’ attack on a ‘defenceless’ man in Birmingham leaving him in a coma for weeks have been released by police. Abbas Alhaq and Uwais Madni attacked a man leaving him for dead in Swallow Close in Sparkbrook close to the city’s Balti Triangle on Sunday, January 19, 2020.

The brothers knew their victim and picked him up around 11.40pm that day. He considered them to the friends of the family and he was unaware that allegations had been made against him.

They drove him to Swallow Close and CCTV footage captured them grabbing weapons believed to be bats or metal poles from the boot of their car, which they used to beat the man up. He was left with serious head injuries and lay unconscious in the street for three hours.,

The siblings then panicked and fled the scene, getting rid of their phones but then returned later to the scene of the attack. Seeing their victim still lying there they then called the ambulance service.

He was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries including a bleed to the brain, facial fractures and fractured ribs. The man spent weeks in a coma and over three months in hospital recovering from his injuries. He also had to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation programme. He has been left disabled.

Detectives going through CCTV were able to prove how the brothers had used their mobiles close to the scene of the attack. Madni, aged 26, from Grove Road, Kings Heath admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He appeared at Birmingham Crown Court where he was jailed for 10 years and four months.

His brother, Alhaq, aged 24, from Swallow Close in Sparkbrook, also pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He also admitted three counts of possessing a bladed article and assaulting a police officer in relation to a separate incident in 2022. He was put behind bars for 10 years.

Detective Sergeant Sam Straw, from West Midlands Police ’s Major Crime Team, said: “This was a vicious attack on a defenceless man which left him very seriously injured. We are pleased that Madni and Alhaq will spend many years behind bars to reflect on their actions.

“And the sentences send out a clear message to others intent on carrying out offences of this nature – we simply won’t tolerate it.” Anyone with information about crime in their neighbourhood should contact police via Live Chat on the force’s website or by calling 101.
