Benedict Cumberbatch returns to telly in the first look at his upcoming TV version of Melrose.

The Sherlock star will lead Sky Atlantic's adaptation of author Edward St Aubyn's semi-autobiographical Patrick Melrose Series, about the highs and lows of an affluent playboy. Check out a preview photo below:

Each episode in the TV adaptation of Melrose will be based on one of St Aubyn's novels and will take place during different eras of the title character's life, as he battles substance abuse and trauma from his childhood in the South of France in the 1960s, New York in the 1980s and Britain in the early 2000s.

Winning the role of Patrick Melrose was a dream of sorts for Benedict Cumberbatch, who once told fans in a Reddit AMA that Edward St Aubyn's troubled playboy was the character he'd most like to play.

"We are delighted to be part of this incredible series," the actor has said. "We have been huge fans of these books for many years, and David Nicholls' adaptations are extraordinary."

This role will mark Cumberbatch's first TV project since his one-off BBC drama The Child in Time aired this past September.

Melrose is set to premiere on first on Sky Atlantic, and then will be available on demand, on Sky Q and the Sky Go mobile app and NOW TV at a later date.
