Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa is looking especially dapper in the first-look images of The Importance of Being Earnest.

The Oscar Wilde adaptation for the National Theatre is currently holding press previews, with general performances running from tomorrow (November 29).

Gatwa, also known for the role of Eric Effiong on Sex Education, plays Algy, friend to protagonist Jack (Fleabag star Hugh Skinner). Both Jack and Algy take on new identities whilst in town in the hope of wooing two eligible ladies, but soon get caught in a web of lies.

Alongside the two protagonists, both rocking great outfits from the mind of Tony Award-winning costume designer Rae Smith, the cast also includes Doctor Who stars Sharon D Clarke and Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́, and Little Women's Eliza Scanlan.

The play is currently on at the Lyttleton Theatre, with a number of captioned, BSL interpreted, audio described and dementia-friendly performances being held throughout its run.

In September, it was announced that The Importance of Being Earnest will screen in cinemas on February 20 next year as part of National Theatre Live.

Meanwhile, Gatwa will be part of the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, with the festive episode just dropping a sneak peek for fans.

Derry Girls and Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan joins Gatwa for the special penned by former showrunner Steven Moffat.

In the preview clip, the Time Lord and his companion have seemingly gone back 65 million years to prevent the Villengard from growing a star on Earth and get their hands on an infinite energy source.

The Importance of Being Earnest runs at the National Theatre until January 25. The play will be released in cinemas on February 20, with tickets available at theimportanceofbeingearnest.ntlive.com.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
