First look at new Duchess of Edinburgh portrait to mark her 60th birthday

A new portrait of the Duchess of Edinburgh has been released to mark her 60th birthday. In it, she appears to be be mid-laugh as she casually sits on a window seat.

It was taken by Christina Ebenezer, a London-based portrait, fashion and commercial photographer, at Bagshot Park this month. The image was revealed ahead of the Duchesses' birthday on Monday, January 20.

Buckingham Palace said she was due to mark the occasion privately at home with the Duke of Edinburgh. The Palace said as she turned 60, the Duchess had a renewed sense of excitement and commitment to her work around gender equality.

Sophie, a favourite of the late Queen, has risen in public prominence over the past year. As the Countess of Wessex, she led Bedworth's proud Armistice Day parade on its 100th anniversary.

Following the service, she took her place on the peace podium on Sergeant Simone Valentine Way, and watched the parade march past. She also took time to speak to youngsters who had turned out for the event as well as parade organisers.
