Disney+ has released a first look photo showing The Handmaid's Tale star McKenna Grace in Crater, a new coming-of-age film from director Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

The sci-fi adventure follows Caleb Channing (played by Isaiah Russell-Bailey), a young boy who was raised on a lunar mining colony and is about to be moved to a distant planet following the death of his father.

Before departing, he and his three best friends, Dylan (Billy Barratt), Borney (Orson Hong) and Marcus (Thomas Boyce), as well as a new arrival from Earth named Addison (Grace), hijack a rover for one last adventure to explore a mysterious crater.

In the first still shared by Disney+ on Twitter, Grace, Russell-Bailey, Barratt, Hong and Boyce can be seen all decked out in their space gear, ready to embark on their cosmic journey.

Crater, which has been described as similar to '80s classic Stand by Me, also stars Scott Mescudi (aka rapper Kid Cudi) as Isaiah's father.

The film was written by John Griffin, with Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Dan Cohen producing.

Grace recently reprised her role as Esther Keyes in the fifth season of The Handmaid's Tale, where her character was practically put through hell and back.

Opening up about how she deals with such hard-hitting roles, the 16-year-old actress said: "I’m just honoured to be playing the roles that are actually my age. To be playing these young women who are going through this, because it’s exactly what I say all the time about playing my age in Handmaid’s Tale.

"If we’re that uncomfortable with me acting out these scenes, why aren’t we doing something for the young women who are going through it?"

Crater will be available to watch on Disney+ from May 12.
