First look inside Huddersfield supermarket with over 50,000 products and Asian and Middle East flavours

A new supermarket with Asian and Middle Eastern products including freshly baked bread, sweets and savouries has opened in Huddersfield town centre.

Umrah Supermarket has more than 50,000 products and an in-house bakery that will be producing a range of foods, from Turkish-style bread. It has billed itself as the biggest halal supermarket in West Yorkshire.

Shoppers were welcomed by a giant panda and polar bear as the Trinity Street store opened its doors at noon on Friday, November 22. Murad Choudhury, who was on hand to help shoppers find their way around, told Yorkshire Live: "Our product range is in excess of 50,000 lines, running from fruit and veg to butchery."

"Our fruit and veg is 'A grade' and is sourced locally from UK markets. We also like to have many special offers.

"Our ethos is to create a nice shopping space. We want to bring the prices down as much as possible."

Umrah has a number of other stories, including in Liverpool and Leicester.

On Friday the Huddersfield supermarket was packed with shoppers, many of them trying free samples of baklava and various pastries. There were big queues for the tills.

The supermarket has a range of drinks and snacks, as well as fresh meat, and a large selection of frozen products from ready made curries to samosas.

Umrah will be open seven days a week, from 8am to 10pm (10-6 Sundays). The store can be found in the former JobCentre premises, round the corner from the bus station. There is some parking spaces round the back of the supermarket.
