The first official picture from the upcoming thriller ominously takes place at a funeral, where Alex Godman (Norton) and his mum (Maria Shukshina) are faced with an unspeakable tragedy.

The ghosts from his family's past are never truly gone and they lead Alex down a very dark and potentially-treacherous path.

Along with this preview photo, BBC One has also released a brand new synopsis: "As the English-raised son of Russian exiles with a mafia history, Alex has spent his life trying to escape the shadow of that criminal past, building his own legitimate business and forging a life with his girlfriend Rebecca (Juliet Rylance).

"What starts out as a story of survival and revenge becomes an epic tale of a man's struggle against the lures of corruption in the modern world and in himself. McMafia is impressive and intimate, glamorous and gritty, global in scale and forensic in detail."

Like previous BBC One hit The Night Manager, McMafia is itself based on a hit book - in this case a non-fiction bestseller written by Misha Glenny.

The writer bringing McMafia to the small screen is none other than Hossein Amini, who wrote the Ryan Gosling thriller Drive and actually adapted Night Manager author John le Carré's Our Kind of Traitor for the big screen.

An impressive international cast for McMafia features Academy Award nominee David Strathairn, Game of Thrones and Black Mirror's Faye Marsay and Leviathan actor Aleksei Serebryakov.

McMafia is being filmed this year in London and Croatia. No premiere date has been announced yet.
