ITV has released a first-look image of Kris Marshall in the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's drama Sanditon.

The Death in Paradise star, who left the sunny (and murderous) streets of Saint Marie two years ago, is joined by Curfew's Rose Williams, Downton Abbey's Theo James and Last Tango in Halifax's Anne Reid in the new series.

The eight-part drama series is based on the author's final and incomplete novel of the same name, and the first images show the stars in their roles ahead of its premiere later this year.

In the series, Marshall stars as Parker family patriarch Tom, an enthusiastic and happily-married man, who hopes to turn Sanditon into a fashionable seaside resort.

Full of energy and charm, Tom is said to be a "risk-taker" whose obsessive vision to put Sanditon on the map might likely put him in some serious trouble.

The series follows Williams' character Charlotte Heywood, a young and spirited woman, who embarks on a relationship with the attractive Sidney Parker (James) in the seaside town.

Sanditon screenwriter Andrew Davies has previously praised the series' "brilliant" ensemble cast, saying that he's very excited to bring Austen's unfinished work to TV screens.

"I'm very excited that we are bringing the world of Sanditon to the TV audience with such a brilliant ensemble cast," he said.

"It's been such fun to develop Jane Austen's fragment into a series – now I'm eager to see our exceptional cast bring Sanditon to life."

Sanditon is set to air on ITV later this year.
