Marvel star Martin Freeman is in the line of fire in the first look at new BBC drama series The Responder.

Freeman physically transforms in the five-part drama from Tony Schumacher, as an urgent response officer grappling with the moral complexities of his job.

As he tackles working the shift, he takes on a new partner named Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo), and their relationship will either make or break both of them personally and professionally.

On top of a brand new photo of Martin Freeman, the BBC has confirmed the cast will feature Twilight's MyAnna Buring, Doctor Who's David Bradley, Harry Potter's Ian Hart, Hollyoaks' Warren Brown, The English Game's Kerrie Hayes and more.

"Tony Schumacher’s scripts were so unique and honest that I knew very quickly that I wanted to be a part of The Responder and take on the role of Chris. No one writes like Tony and it has been exhilarating inhabiting the world he has created," Martin Freeman said.

Writer Tony Schumacher added: "My fantasy casting when I was writing the character of Chris in The Responder was Martin Freeman. Seeing that fantasy become reality is beyond exciting. Martin is one of the great British actors.
