At his lowest, Bernard finds an antique jewellery box and gives it a rub. That's when Flora the genie — played by Bridesmaids, The Little Mermaid and Can You Ever Forgive Me?'s Melissa McCarthy — suddenly appears.
Flora reveals that the whole three wishes thing isn't real, and she can grant unlimited wishes, which probably makes up for the fact that she washes her hair in the toilet and eats hand sanitiser.
The question is, will Flora be able to help Bernard turn his life around and get his family back together?
Written by Curtis and directed by Sam Boyd, Genie also stars Alan Cumming, Luis Guzmán, Marc Maron, Denée Benton and more. The film is a remake of the 1991 movie Bernard and the Genie, which Curtis wrote and Cumming starred in as the main character Bernard Bottle.
Recently, Curtis admitted that he regrets the "chubby" jokes made in Love Actually and addressed some of the other problematic elements in his other films.
"I wish I'd been ahead of the curve," he said. "Because I came from a very un-diverse school and [had a] bunch of [Oxford] university friends, I think that I've hung on, on the diversity issue, to the feeling that I wouldn't know how to write those parts. I think I was just sort of stupid and wrong about that.
"I just don't know. I feel as though me, my casting director, my producers, just didn't think about it, just didn't look outwards enough."
Genie will be on Sky Cinema and NOW from December 1.
