A first trailer for the reboot of 1990s series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has been released and it hints at a much darker backstory for its protagonist.

Like the original series, the new show – simply titled Bel-Air – follows a street-smart teenager from Philadelphia who is sent to live with his wealthy relatives in Bel Air, Los Angeles for a chance at a better future.

While the series with Will Smith was very much a comedy, the new one is grittier than fans might expect.

Set to premiere on Peacock later this year, Bel-Air is produced by Will Smith and stars Jabari Banks as Will.

The series stems from a 2019 short movie also named Bel-Air from writer Morgan Cooper, in which he reimagined Will's coming-of-age story in a more serious tone.

The trailer of the upcoming series confirms it won't be all laughs as Will's past is revealed.

As shown in the clip, the teenager got involved with some local criminals, fired a gun and ended up in jail. Despite moving to LA, his troubles seem far from over as the bad people he has left behind might catch up with him.

Alongside newcomer Banks, the show also stars Adrian Holmes and Cassandra Freeman as Philip and Vivian Banks, Will's uncle and aunt.

Olly Sholotan plays Will's cousin, Carlton Banks, ready to show Will the perks of the neighbourhood. Coco Jones and Akira Akbar portray Carlton's sisters Hilary and Ashley respectively.

Bel-Air is set to debut on February 13 in the US. Bel-Air debuts on February 14th on Peacock on Sky/NOW in the UK.
