Wine, bread and cheese. It’s a godly combination, isn’t it?

Popularised by the Swiss and mastered jointly with the French, cheese fondue was created with the sole purpose of increasing cheese consumption throughout 1930s continental Europe. An excellent reason if you ask us.

With the winter air setting in, it's important to keep your happy levels way, way up, and what better way is there to make a human person happier than with a caerphilly chosen list of five fabulous cheese fondues? From boho shacks in Spitalfields to south London secrets, fill your bellies with the ultimate comfort food this season at these top spots for a dairy overdose.

Androuet

This Parisian institution located deep inside Spitalfields market is an absolute gem. There are two devilishly thick and generous fondues to choose from: the classic gourmet ‘fondue of the day’ or a very creamy blue cheese option which can be ordered at the charcuterie with baby potatoes. If you’re a sucker for all things racelette, try Androuet’s without hesitation. Just imagine smooth, silky fromage gently caressing a bed of meat and taytos. It's incredible. After you've recovered from your cheese sweats, head to Androuet's cheese shop for a formidable selection of French and British cheeses, innumerable tangy chutneys and fine artisan meats.

Say bonjour to Walluc, a delectable and charming little Bohemian bistro in bustling Shoreditch. Instagrammably rustic, the buzzing little place is nestled on the ever-so-trendy Redchurch Street and offers two decently priced fondues which combine a great mix of gruyere, garlic, emmenthal and gorgonzola. You’ll be pleased to know all come with side salads and potatoes to cleanse the palette – and make you feel less guilty about all those extra carbs.

St Moritz

St Moritz always has a place on any fondue round-up. Why? In short, it’s exceptional. The oldest Swiss gaff in the capital offers seasonal fare in the form of meats, wines, artisanal boards and all things fondue. Exactly eight fondues are on offer and come in the form of a traditional bubbling fondue neuchateloise with gruyere and emmental or fondue bourguignonne served with dippable cubes of prime beef. It’s also one of the few fondue bars in the capital which offer a veggie option, too.

Get a taste for the Alps with a sweet or savoury fondue in one of Balham’s après-ski chalets. The melted cheese is served with campaillou bread, pickles, cured meats and roasted garlic, while the chocolate fondue comes with marshmallows, honeycomb and fruit.

Tramshed

Share Tramshed’s salted caramel fondue with three of your friends. It comes with fluffy pink marshmallows and sugary doughnuts for dunking.

The Cheese Bar

Famous are these cheese melting maestros for their molten cheddar porn antics. Special Cheese Bar fondue nights with changing menus take place every Thursday from 6pm, but be quick fromage fiends: you’ve only got until February 2018 before their fondue disappears forever.

Blanchette

This French bistro serves a hot melted Mont D’or cheese with potatoes, cornichon and charcuterie.
