Five men have been charged over the suspected acid attack on a three-year-old boy in Worcester.

West Mercia Police said three men from London, aged 22, 25 and 26, and a 39-year-old and 41-year-old from Wolverhampton have been charged with conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

They are due before magistrates in Kidderminster on Wednesday.

The force said it would not be releasing the names of those who have been charged.

The boy suffered serious burns to his face and an arm in the alleged incident at Home Bargains in Tallow Hill on Saturday afternoon.

He was discharged from hospital on Sunday after treatment but the long-term implications of his injuries are as yet unknown.

The toddler was in a pushchair with his family in a Worcester shop when a corrosive substance was ‘thrown or sprayed’ over him, according to West Mercia Police.

Chief Superintendent Mark Travis said the boy is recovering at home with his family, who are being supported by specialist officers.

He told Sky News: ‘A young family were out shopping and a substance appears to either have been thrown or sprayed towards a three-year-old child who was in a pushchair.’

He added: ‘We are uncertain about the long-term implications of those burns, but we do hope that these won’t be life-changing injuries.’

Worcester City Council leader Marc Bayliss described the attack as ‘absolutely pure evil’.

He added: ‘I have never heard of an acid attack in Worcester so this is absolutely not something we have any experience of.’
